A Modern Olympia, of which there exists an earlier version, was shown in Paris at the first Impressionist exhibition, held in the Nadar studios.

It was painted at Auvers-sur-Oise, at the home of Dr Gachet, whose son Paul has related its genesis. One day Dr Gachet was speaking of Manet’s Olympia, with such open admiration that Cezanne’s self-esteem was piqued. He took up a canvas, and almost at once dashed off the picture in all its fresh brilliance (Paul Gachet, Deux Amis des Impresstionists: Le Docteur Gachet et Murer, Paris, 1956).

It is a baroque work in which Cezanne’s blue-green palette is only suggested. He was only thirty-four years old. Having left Aix, like Zola, for the conquest of Paris, and ridding himself of all orthodox standards, he was, says Paul Gachet, “animated by a stubborn will to succeed. Unwilling to accept at any price the bourgeois life offered him by his banker father, he preferred a hard existence with Hortense Fiquet and their child at Auvers, where he arrived with a bundle of cheap cardboard and a few pieces of badly sized canvas, following the economical practices of Guillaumin”.

Cezanne at this time wore a workingman’s red belt to hold up his trousers. Another of his companions at Auvers was Camille Pissarro, with whom he painted in the surrounding countryside, and especially at Pontoise. It was Pissarro who lightened his palette and introduced him to the division of tones.
