Chateau Noir near Aix-en-Provence, attracted Cezanne’s attention in his last years. It was used by him as a studio and in fact appears in a number of his paintings, including his landscape of Mont Saint-Victoire.

Dissatisfied with his composition, Cezanne had a one-inch strip of canvas added to each side of the original painting while he was still working on it. He then placed trees to frame the picture on the left side, whereas on the right he created a greater (and in consequence more dramatic) distance between the square block of the house’s terrace and the edge of the painting.

The composition seems to revolve around the central pivot of the house, and Cezanne’s horizontal lines, used in earlier works to create depth, are now abandoned in favour of emphasizing diagonals and distorting spatial relationships. The enigmatically placed branches in the top right hand corner assume a decorative rather than a constructive function and stress the flat nature of the canvas.
