Cezanne spent the period of the Franco-Prussian war at the house owned by his mother at L’Estaque, near Marseilles, returning there for extended stays between 1876 and 1889.

Having followed Pissarro’s advice, to ‘replace tonal modelling by the study of colors’, he began in the brilliant southern sunlight to put the theory into practice – to attempt, like Monet, to depict light through the use of color alone. He has here, as in so many of his landscapes, divided the painting into horizontal bands; the foreground, the sea, the distant mountains and the sky.

Distance is created not through lines meeting at the horizon and making a tunnel into the picture, but by one horizontal plane being placed on top of another. In this he is working in a similar way to Poussin – one of the Old Masters he most admired. But these horizontal bands have another effect: as well as creating a sense of distance, they also emphasize the surface of the canvas itself.

Cezanne was always very aware of the need to organise what he saw into a work of art, and the success of this painting is a result of the relationship he created between the surface design and the illusion of depth.

In the foreground the closely woven, interlocking horizontals and verticals of trees and houses also work as a two-dimensional design.
