The Poplars was the first Cezanne to be purchased by the Louvre. After his death his reputation increased rapidly as did the prices paid for his paintings. Most evident here is Cezanne’s technique of building a picture through subtle color variations rather than with hard lines or contours which, he said, were not to be found in nature.

Cezanne condemned Neo-Impressionism ‘which outlines the contours with a black stroke, a failing that must be fought at all costs’. This procedure of his may have been influenced by contemporary landscape photography, which at this stage in its development was very tonal in appearance. Even Cezanne’s words are those of black and white photography, describing color as tones ranging from light to dark:

“An optical impression is produced on our organs of sight which makes us classify as light, half-tone or quarter-tone the surfaces represented by color sensations”.

His approach is therefore fundamentally different to that of Van Gogh, Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec who, in their reaction against the photographic realism and academic art of the time, stressed the emotive force and compositional importance of the outlines.

These artists also tended to simplify or eliminate tonal relationships.
