Van Gogh stayed with Dr Gachet in Auvers from May to July in 1890. He painted numerous views of the buildings and the surrounding landscape. He was attracted by the town, but as he poured his emotion into his canvases, his mental state worsened.

In a letter to Theo he wrote: “In my work I am risking my life and half my reason has been lost in it”. He never finished this letter. Within hours he had shot himself, and two days later he died.
