At The Races was painted after Degas became interested in painting racehorses during his stay In Normandy, an area noted for horse breeding and training.
In the 1860s Degas gradually discovered his vocation as a painter of modern life, and from the middle of the decade the racecourse became one of the subjects to which he returned again and again.
Paris had only just acquired its own racecourse – Longchamps, in the Bois de Boulogne – and racing was high fashion; the pretty cluster of blue and white parasols among the spectators suggests the upper-class character of the occasion.
Edouard Manet, Degas’ friend and great rival as a modern-life artist, also did race paintings, though after Degas and perhaps through his influence – as Degas enjoyed reminding him.
Unlike Manet and most other artists, Degas is not interested in the race itself but in the scene just before the start, when the jockeys are trying with varying degrees of success to control their mounts; one has become thoroughly alarmed and has bolted.
The picture is among Degas’ most inspired compositions, seemingly casual yet worked out to the last detail.
