The Paris Bourse, or Stock Exchange, would have been familiar to a man of Degas’ rank. His family fortune was founded on banking although, following the death of his father in 1874 and a general post-war depression, Degas had to sell his house and collection of Old Master paintings to settle the family’s debts.
In this painting of stockbrokers, as in other works of this period, he cleverly conveys the importance of his subjects by their stance, despite their faces being barely visible. In some pictures he even showed people entirely from the back, following the critic Duranty’s theory that the status of a person could easily be determined from his deportment.
The principle figure is Ernest May, a Jewish banker who was also a discriminating art collector and admirer of Degas’ work.
