In this unfinished painting, Combing the Hair, Degas pursued the theme of women grooming themselves which with ballet subjects was to be his principle motif in his last years.
Combing the hair features in many works, and he observantly notes that the fashion for long hair often required the assistance of a maid and even so was something of a struggle, hence the women clutches her hand to her hair as it is tugged.
In later life, Degas’ use of brilliant color increased. There is little more than the suggestion of form and the hair, dress, wall and drapes are blended in a rich sea of red. By this time his eyesight has worsened to such an extent that he tackled fewer detailed subjects, turning his attention briefly to landscapes, a group of which were shown by Durand-Ruel in 1893, the only exhibition in his lifetime devoted to his work.
