Here in his painting The Dancing Class with ballet-master Jules Perrot taking a class of rats (the young members of the company), we can see all the skill of observation and rendition Degas displays in his best-loved paintings of ballet dancers.

Both on stage and behind the scenes, dancers were invariably presented in idealized and sentimental poses, aimed largely to appeal to the followers of the great ballerinas of the day. Degas broke with this tradition in his portrayals of dancers at rest and offered such informal details as here – the dancer scratching her back, others adjusting their costume, the watering-can on the floor (used to settle the dust) and the little dog.

He makes valuable use of the floorboards to indicate the perspective of the practise-room, and delights in representing the texture of the dresses and the highlights of the colored sashes and hair decorations.

All these elements come together with the immediacy of a photograph to convey the impression of an inadvertent glimpse into the room, but in reality every detail was carefully constructed and calculated to harmonize with the composition.

This painting was shown at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874.
