Joanna, the daughter of his sister-in-law Estelle by her first marriage, appears in this painting. As ever, Degas was dissatisfied with the result, particularly because he found it difficult as a visiting relative to get his subject to pose naturally.

The unusual choice of this somewhat unflattering scene is a prelude to his later works portraying woman engaged in their toilette. It emphasizes his relegation of subject-matter to a subordinate role beneath its value as a record of some transient everyday event in which gesture and expression become dominant features.
