You can now own a Degas reproduction of The Star hand-painted oil painting to museum quality and guaranteed for one year.

The Star, also known as L’Etoile, is perhaps the most famous Degas, and one in which woman is not, as Felix Feneon remarked, “soiled by being likened to an animal”.

This dancer on the stage is, on the contrary, a kind of fairy of illusion. The artist sees her “bending and pirouetting, her legs performing such difficult feats as jetés and chasses, battements and entrechats” (Roger Marx, Maitres d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, Paris, 1914).

Her bust is thrust forward, her arms raised in the graceful gesture of a prima ballerina; there are flowers in her hair, on her bodice, and at her waist; and everything is surrounding by a glowing haze from the footlights and the soft half-shadows of the scenery. The pastel texture gives the work the nuance and flat brilliance of a butterfly wing.

Seven years previously, on September 30 1871, Degas had written to the painter James Tissot in London: I have just had, and still have, some trouble with my eyes. This happened on the riverbank at Chatou, while I was painting a watercolor in bright sunlight, and for three weeks I was unable to read or work or go out, and was terrified that I wouldn’t recover”.

For its color, movement, and subtlety, this pastel is considered the best example of Degas as an Impressionist. It is also a work in which his realism reaches a level of enchantment. It formed part of the Caillebotte Collection.
