Degas Reproduction of

With Woman with Chrysanthemums Degas revives the art of the portrait by the audacity of his composition. One cannot say which is the most important, the bouquet, the table, or the lady; it recalls the line by Alberic II on the Pompeiian palace: “Will it be God, table, or basin?”

It hardly matters since everything in the picture has the same plastic value; all is conceived in terms of drawing, color, and harmony. The chrysanthemums with their many and lively hues bring out the neutral, yellowish tones of the portrait.

The drawing is distinct, and would even be dry were it not amplified by color. It is one of the first canvases in which Degas cut off his subject by the frame in the Japanese manner, a picture seemingly not composed, since the woman might have almost sat down at the table by chance. But everything here has been thought out and arranged, even the crystal pitcher and the carelessly tossed gloves.

Here the artist is mocking, witty, Parisian (with a touch of that Neapolitan spirit that had come down to him from his forebears). As an exhortation to himself, he wrote:

“Paint portraits of people in familiar and typical attitudes, and above all give their faces the same choice of expression that you give their bodies”.

Degas was more of a draftsman than any other Impressionist. Along with Ingres, he might have said: Nulla dies sine linea. He is the linear artist of the group. He liked to reflect while making notes from nature.

“To do a portrait”, he said, “have the model pose on the ground floor and go upstairs to work, to accustom yourself to remembering forms and expressions, and never draw or paint immediately”.
