Family in the Garden by Gauguin

The Painter’s Family In The Garden
Oil on canvas, 1882
Intentionally or otherwise, in this picture, Family in the Garden, Gauguin has put forward an idyllic view of solid, prosperous family life.
The setting is the garden of a large, comfortable house in the rue Carcel in Paris, where Gauguin’s financial success made it possible for him to keep his family in some style.
At this point in his career he had been gainfully employed for almost a decade, having apparently put behind him his roving years in the merchant navy. He has also progressed in the art from the status of a gifted amateur to that of a fellow-colleague, still not a full-time professional but accepted by most of the Impressionists with whom he showed his works.
But although Gauguin devoted more and more of his free time to art, we cannot be sure that he would have ever risked the pleasant existence pictured here by giving up his business career had fate not taken a hand.
