The Farmyard at Auvers by Cezanne

Farmyard at Auvers
Oil on canvas, 1880
65 x 54 cm (25 x 21 ins)
In the Farmyard at Auvers, Cezanne paints what his mind sees rather than what his eyes see.
Unlike the Impressionists who wished to record their visual sensations as accurately as possible, Cezanne modified and re-arranged what he saw before him for the sake of the overall design. Perspectives were altered and planes tilted to give, as in this painting, a strong sense of structure.
In one of his rare instances of theorizing he described how his art was a result of what he saw (sensations of the retina), combined with what he felt for the subject, all of which had to be organised by the mind into a work of art.
In this very deliberate and objective approach he differs radically from the subjective and very emotive art of Van Gogh and Gauguin.
