This painting, And The Gold From Their Bodies, dates from Gauguin’s stay in Dominica in 1901. Gauguin sold his Tahitian property in August 1901 and embarked for the Marquesas. There he hoped to find the unspoiled Eden that eluded him and, on a more practical note, a place where the living was cheaper and easier than Tahiti; as he was now receiving fairly regular payments from Europe, his prospects seemed better than for some years.
On 16 September he landed at Atuana on the island of Hiva Oa (Dominica), and within a few weeks he had purchased land in the village and built a hut.
From there he wrote to de Monfreid: “I am more and more pleased with my choice... What models!!! A wonder, and I have already begun to work... In the isolation of a place like this, a man’s mind is reinvigorated. Here poetry arises all by itself, and to suggest that poetry you have only to surrender to your dreams as you paint... I feel that in art I am right, but will I have the strength to give it positive expression?”
His health worsened, the island was devastated by a cyclone and he fell foul of the civil and religious establishment when he tried to encourage the inhabitants to relinquish Christianity and to return to their own religion.
He was tried and sentenced to three months imprisonment, but died before the sentence could be carried out.
