Nevermore is the most celebrated all of Gauguin’s Tahitian nudes, showing a fearful girl, turned away from what she believes to be a spirit, embodied in the raven on the windowsill.

The raven and the picture’s title are direct references to the poem by Edgar Allan Poe, with its sinister refrain ‘Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore”.’

In his second sojourn in Tahiti Gauguin became increasingly fascinated with the islanders’ religion and folklore, and in his paintings he frequently expresses their superstitious fears.

The painting harks back to Manet’s Olympia and is similarly defined by a hard-edged outline; the curves of the subject’s body are repeated in the bed-head and the background decoration.

The painting expresses his intention, as Gauguin wrote his own description: “I wanted to suggest, with a simple nude, a certain long-vanished barbaric luxury. The whole thing is saturated with colors that are sombre and sad; it is neither silk nor velvet, nor batiste, nor gold that creates luxury here, but simply matter that has been enriched by the hand of an artist. As a title, Nevermore; not exactly the raven of Edgar Poe, but the bird of the devil who keeps watch... I think it is a good canvas”.

In attempting to depict a dream-like scene, he follows his aspiration to provoke thought in the viewer “by the mysterious relationship existing between our brains and such arrangement of colors and lines”.
