Gauguin returned to France at the end of 1893, but this self-portrait reveals his yearning to return to Tahiti: on the wall behind him is a copy, in reverse, of his painting Manao Tupapau (The Spirit of the Dead Watching), a nude painting of Teha’amana, his young Tahitian mistress whom he had left on the island.
He resembles a carved idol, with his face powerfully modelled in highlighted planes. The setting is his Paris studio in the rue Vercingétorix, which he was able to rent in December 1893, after receiving a windfall inheritance, and decorated in colorful ‘South Seas’ style.
