Village Under Snow is a curious throwback to Gauguin’s early style, using the small, swiftly applied brushstrokes with which the Impressionists attempted to capture the atmosphere of a scene.

The strongly drawn contours and monumental design are those of the mature artist. Though reminiscent of Brittany, the canvas was probably painted early in 1894, before Gauguin revisited his former rural haunts – which, paradoxically, he represented with almost tropical warmth.

However, any nostalgia Gauguin may have felt was qualified by the disastrous nature of his trip to the province. His former landlady at Le Pouldu refused to return the works he had left with her, and court upheld her refusal (Gauguin had left owing her money).

During a brawl at Concarneau the painter broke his leg just above the ankle. And having allowed Annah the Javanese to return to Paris ahead of him, he arrived to find that she had cleared out his studio and disappeared, leaving nothing of value – except his “worthless” canvases.

At a sale of Gauguin’s effects in 1903, together with four carved panels, Village Under Snow fetched seven francs; it is a measure of the increase in the regard in which Gauguin’s work is now held that when it was sold to the Louvre in 1952, it made nine million francs.
