Vision After The Sermon, also known as Jacob Wrestling, one of Gauguin’s best-known works, was painted in Pont-Aven after his break with Impressionism.
The result was revolutionary in its containment of forms within distinct outlines, its use of pure, flat colors and the elimination of shadows – features derived from Japanese prints which had affected the art of the Impressionists, but never in such an extreme manner.
Having just heard a sermon on the subject, the women see it in a vision: that Gauguin told Vincent Van Gogh, was why the women were painted naturalistically while the rest of the scene was non-naturalistic. In actual fact, Gauguin had been moving away from naturalism for some time, but the acceleration represented by the Vision After The Sermon was brought about through the influence of a younger artist, Emile Bernard. He and Gauguin developed a ‘Synthetist’ style which involved working from memory and imagination to eliminate inessentials, using bold outlines and areas of strong unbroken color.
Both men were also influenced by a literary and artistic movement, Symbolism, which encouraged a symbolic and rather cloudily ‘spiritual’ approach that surfaced in Gauguin’s work from time to time over the years.
Gauguin tried to present his symbolic masterpiece to a local church, but the curate could not be convinced that he was serious and declined the gift.
