In May 1892 Gauguin wrote to his wife telling her that he had at last settled down and grasped something of the real character of the Tahitians, “whom I represent in a very enigmatic manner”.

The enigma was compounded by the Tahitian titles he gave his work (implying a mastery of the native language that he never achieved), which were usually not much more informative when translated into French.

Nafea faa ipoipo? – When will you marry? – has at least some relationship to the picture, since one girl is wearing a magnolia behind her ear to indicate that she is looking for a husband.

The picture itself is stunningly bold and original. Horizontal bands of color run across the canvas in an almost schematised fashion, broken by the monumental central group with its contrasts of brown, red, pink and orange. The arrangement of the overlapping figures is both psychologically uneasy and fascinating.
