The fields of ripe corn ready for reaping filled van Gogh’s mind in the fall following his spring visit to Sainted-Maries-de-la-mer. The wheat fields lay to the southeast of Arles in an area called Le Crau, once swampy but now rich agricultural land.

The agriculture context reminded him of the fields of Brabant, but here the fields were filled with sunshine and color, fruit trees abounded instead of root crops, and the people, though poor, looked happy.

Various tones of yellow predominate in this painting, contrasting with the violet tones of the Alpilles mountains, where van Gogh loved to walk, and the green of the sky.
