Madame Monet With Her Son by Monet

Madame Monet With Her Son
Oil on canvas, 1875
This delightfully affectionate portrait, Madame Monet With Her Son, is in fact misnamed. It certainly represents Camille, but the child playing at her feet could not be Jean – by 1875 he was an eight-year- old boy. And Michel Monet was not born until 1878.
The painting is remarkable in several respects. It is one of Monet’s finest portraits of his wife, approaching Renoir in style. For the first time Monet has used the device of massed flowers placed horizontally along the top of the picture, a scheme he used often in his Giverny period when painting the garden in front of his house. Also noteworthy is the spirited and expressive treatment of the pleated dress.
One sad detail. This charming canvas, Madame Monet With Her Son, is the last detailed likeness of Camille; in general Monet preferred not to particularize his portraits. Here it is evident that he deliberately chose to do so.
