Luncheon on the Grass, one of Manet’s best known paintings, also known as Le Dejeuner sur l’Herbe and The Picnic, was shown at the Salon des Refusés under the title The Bath.
The uproar aroused by the picture resulted partly from the shock of the contrast between the woman’s blatant nudity and the contemporary dress of the men, and also by Manet’s audacious technique – the bright, fresh color freely applied and the forms suggested rather than, as was traditional, delineated in fine detail.
The irony of the outcry, which led to Manet’s elevation to the status of hero among the young painters of the day, was that Dejeuner was based on a number of classical models, most notably a lost painting by Raphael, The Judgement of Paris, known through an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi, and various simlar compositions including Giorgione’s Concert Champetre in the Louvre.
Manet often copied compositions from paintings seen on his travels, but applied to them his own techniques. His models were Victorine Meurend, who also posed for Olympia, his brother Eugéne, and his future brother-in-law, Ferdinand Leenhoff.
This painting was bought by the singer Faure, sold to Durand-Ruel and ultimately presented to the French Nation.
