In the spring of 1863 Manet exhibited several paintings at the gallery run by his dealer, Louis Martentot. They were received without much enthusiasm, and this Tuileries picture was positively abused because its subject was ‘trivial’.
The scene is the gardens close to the now vanished Tuileries palace in Paris, where a band is playing to a fashionable crowd. Most of its members can be identified as prominent figures in artistic and literary life, including Manet himself (extreme left) and the poet Baudelaire, who had probably had strong influence on the artist through his call for a painter who cold grasp the heroic potential of men who wore neckties and boots.
The painting has no single focal point, so that the eye moves restlessly across the canvas, as agitated as the crowd itself.
