Here she is, the famous Olympia that aroused so much outcry at the Salon of 1865 (to protect her from the blows of canes and umbrellas, it was necessary to hang her high on the wall, from where she gazed down defiantly on the onlookers).

What audacity on Manet’s part to present this common little woman stretched out nude on a flowered shawl and the sheets of a hospitable bed, wearing only a slipper, a black velvet neck-ribbon, a bracelet with a locket, and a pink bow in her hair, and a servant bringing a bouquet from a client, and a little black cat beside her!

The critic Ernest Chesneau, a champion of Romanticism, wrote of this picture: “Manet succeeds in provoking almost scandalous laughter, which draws Salon visitors to the ludicrous creature (if I may be allowed the expression) whom he calls Olympia”.

Paul Mantz said that the outline of the figure seemed to be “drawn with soot”.

“Insults rain down on me like hailstones”, Manet wrote to Baudelaire, who replied from Brussels: “Do you think that you’re the first man to be in this position?” and cited Wagner as one who had been ridiculed without dying of it.

As for Degas, he remarked astutely to Manet after the affair was over : “So now you’re as famous as Garibaldi”.

After a relentless campaign in its favour sponsored by Claude Monet, the painting was admitted by subscription in 1890 to the Luxembourg Museum.

In 1907, by order of Clemenceau, then Prime Minister, it was transferred to The Louvre, transported in a single carriage by the custodians, and hung in the Salle des Etats opposite Ingres’ Odalisque.
