Manet Reproduction of Reading

Reading
Oil on canvas, 1869
Now you can own a Manet reproduction of Reading oil painting, hand-painted to museum quality and guaranteed for one year.
Reading is a tour de force of white-on-white, with passages of wonderful painting which convey the gauzy semi-transparent quality of some of the materials. The sea of whiteness serves to emphasize the full, healthy flesh tones of the woman’s face, to remarkably flattering effect.
She is Manet’s wife Suzanne, a Dutch girl who as Suzanne Leenhoff had worked as a piano tutor in the household of Manet’s parents. Two years older than Manet, she had gone back to the Netherlands to bear a child, known as Léon Koella or Léon Leenhoff, who was passed off as Suzanne’s younger brother.
The presumptive father, Koella, probably never existed. Manet’s patent affection for the boy, the number of times he painted him and the terms of his will make it virtually certain that he was Leon’s father.
However, Manet did not marry Suzzanne until 1863, a fact that may not be unconnected with his father’s death a year before.
