She is Manet’s wife Suzanne, a Dutch girl who as Suzanne Leenhoff had worked as a piano tutor in the household of Manet’s parents. Two years older than Manet, she had gone back to the Netherlands to bear a child, known as Léon Koella or Léon Leenhoff, who was passed off as Suzanne’s younger brother.

The presumptive father, Koella, probably never existed. Manet’s patent affection for the boy, the number of times he painted him and the terms of his will make it virtually certain that he was Leon’s father.

However, Manet did not marry Suzzanne until 1863, a fact that may not be unconnected with his father’s death a year before.
