Manet worked very hard on The Balcony painting, and although not every part of it is successful, some passages of color in it are superb, notably the lovely tinted whites of the woman’s dresses and the brilliant purple-blue of the necktie worn by the man with the cigarette.
This is another painting which Manet executed as a variation on a Spanish theme. It challenges comparison with Goya’s Majas on a Balcony, substituting ‘modern’ self-absorption for the intimacy of the original.
The seated woman, elegantly arrayed in Spanish dress, is Manet’s painter friend Berthe Morisot. The man is artist Antonin Guillemet, the woman pulling on her gloves Jenny Claus, a violinist. In the background, 16-year-old Léon Koella and carries a coffee service.
Berthe Morisot was urged to see the painting hanging in the Salon of 1869 by Manet who was too nervous to go alone. She wrote, “I appear strange rather than ugly; it seems that those looking at me have murmured the words ‘femme fatale’.”
The painting received the customary criticism and remained unsold at the time of Manet’s death.
