Maximilian was an Austrian archduke placed on the throne of Mexico by Napoleon III. French troops kept him their until Napoleon withdrew them, bowing to pressure from the United States.
Maximilian was captured by the Mexican resistance and executed along with two of his generals. The episode was seen as a humiliation for France, and Napoleon was widely blamed for it.
As a republican, Manet was no friend to Napoleon’s imperial regime.
Painted as a criticism of France’s involvement in Mexico, the political embarrassment surrounding the affair made it impossible for Manet to exhibit the painting. Public showings were forbidden and it was first seen in New York in 1879.
