The Fifer was painted under the influence of the Spanish master Velasquez on his return to France after Manet travelled to Spain in 1865.
The programmed mentality of the 19th century critics comes out particularly clearly in their reaction to this delightful picture: they hated it, and denounced it as ‘an outfitter’s signboard’.
What offended them was Manet’s decision to simplify the painting as far as was thinkable in the 1860s. And so, although the fall of light on the folds of the uniform are recorded, most of the painting is in flat, bold colors, boldly outlined: a notably cunning touch is Manet’s use of the black stripes on the boy’s trousers as a heavy outline.
In this painting, the two main influences on Manet came together: the strong outlines and colors owe much to Japanese prints, while the empty background (with just a hint of aureole around the boy) is taken from Spanish portraits, especially those of Manet’s admired master, Velazquez.
The boy actually was a fifer, attached to the Imperial Guard.
