Manet visited the Grand Canal Venice in September 1875 with his friend and fellow painter from outside the Impressionist circle James Tissot, who had settled in London after the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71.
Although the watery splendour of Venice has inspired many great artists, Manet found it hard to settle, but in spite of this he managed to paint one of his most dashingly Impressionist art works, in which the dazzling Italian sunlight reduces the architecture in the background to a golden-pink blur of shapes barely indicated, and the pale blue of the sky becomes a richer, deeper blue when reflected in the waters of the canal.
For all its apparent speed of execution, however, it is an unusually intricate composition, with the play of near and far emphasized by the placing of the boldly striped poles receding just right of centre and the gondolas on either side brusquely chopped off by the picture’s frame.
