Girl Arranging Her Hair

Oil on canvas, 1886

Mary Cassatt was the American artist most closely associated with the Impressionists and this picture once in Degas’ possession, was included in the eighth and last Impressionist exhibition.

It shows how assiduously and with what faculty of assimilation she had studied the work of Degas. This appears in the realism of gesture, intimacy of setting and above all in the attention paid to drawing. In this last respect her quality of precision was of the kind that caused Degas, on first seeing her work in the Salon of 1874, to remark: “There’s someone who feels just the way I do”.

There is an illustrative element in her work, however, that clearly distinguishes it from his, though lengthy comparison with the great French artist would be invidious.

Like the other female adherent of Impressionism, Berthe Morisot, she developed herself to painting women and children. The two artists were alike in the independence of mind that led them to prefer the much abused Impressionist group to the conventional Salon, though Berthe Morisot was much nearer the core of the movement in rendering the effects of light on her sisters – to the exclusion of those outlines that Mary Cassett insisted on so firmly, and which she was able to turn to advantage in the color prints she also produced.
