Among the Impressionists, Mary Cassatt was rather like an American fairy godmother who came to the rescue of her companions. Primarily it was she who introduced Paul Durand-Ruel, then in severe financial difficulties, to such wealthy American collectors among her friends as H O Havemeyer.

She was a particular friend of Degas, who depicted her at The Louvre, at the Musee des Antiques (as it was then called) looking at an Etruscan tomb. “She paints as though she were making hats”, he said of this woman, who was chiefly concerned with painting children.
