Monet was the most responsive of all the Impressionists to the changes of the seasons and by no means confined himself to the summer season when plein-air painting could most comfortably be pursued. He studied open-air effect the year round, in this instance the autumnal color of trees by the riverside.

As autumn dyed the leaves with its own local colors of red, orange, and yellow, this aspect of nature might be thought adventitious from an Impressionist point of view, somewhat disgusting that relationship of light and color at which they were aimed; but Monet was able to add an extra intensity to the glow of foliage not only bright in itselt but observed in bright sunlight.

The view looking along the Seine was evidently painted from his ‘floating studio’, the small boat which he had fitted up with a hut to house his painting materials, and if necessary to sleep in, and with sufficient desk space for his easel. In this he imitated Daubigny who cruised happily on the Oise in a similar craft.

The boat gave Monet a wider choice of viewpoints for his river subjects than he could obtain from the shore. Here he is able to do full justice to a foreground and long perspective of water, the mirror-like gleam of its surface and the colourful depth of reflections.
