The Boulevard des Capucines

Oil on canvas, 1873

The Boulevard des Capucines was one of the canvases Monet contributed to the first Impressionist Exhibition. And though it is a dazzling glimpse of Paris, drenched with the very essence of the beautiful city, it too incited the public and press to anger and scorn.

A bitter article in Charivari quotes an imaginary visitor in front of the Boulevard who "sneered in Mephistophelean manner, 'Only , be so good as to tell me what those innumerable tongue-lickings in the lower part of the picture represent?'"

It is in just these summary strokes that we realize how expressive was the shorthand Monet created for the representation of a group of moving figures. Almost half a century after the picture was painted, but while the artist still lived, his admirer Gustave Geffroy explained brilliantly that suggesting a crowd is a very different thing from representing a single man.

"There's not the time to see a man, a carriage, and the painter who slows up for details will never catch the confusion of movements and the multiple strokes that go to make up the whole. Claude Monet hasn't made such a mistake: his canvas is alive, vibrant as the Paris that inspired it".

In his excellent book "Monet" Christoph Heinrich wrote on the detail of Boulevard des Capucines:

"Monet rendered the constant flow of passers-by along the boulevard as a flickering impression of haze and light, done in vibrant dabs of paint. As we look at the painting we receive an overall impression without registering individual figures or details".
