Alice Hoschede is the model for the girl seated beneath a willow, sitting in the grass reading. It is one of the rare paintings of her by Monet, who probably wanted to avoid unduly provoking her husband.
Although Ernest seemed no longer very attached to his wife, he was an occasional visitor to Vetheuil, and if he was expected, Monet would simply absent himself and go on a painting trip to the Normandy coast.
It was not until after the death of Hoschede – who by then had become a respected art critic – that the couple were able, with relief, to cease the pretence. On July 1892 they were married. By then, Alice was a stout matron with a sharp tongue and a commanding air; Monet no longer painted her, preferring to use her daughters as sitters.
This delightful scene, Girl Beneath a Willow, bears a strong resemblance to Summer, the Meadow, painted six years before, which shows Camille in a similar attitude.
