The Houses of Parliament painting is one of a hundred or so London pictures Monet painted during his visits to England.

In 1899 Monet revisited London. On this and on subsequent visits in 1900 and 1901, he painted the Thames from his room in the Savoy Hotel, and the Houses of Parliament from a room in St Thomas’s Hospital on the South Bank of the river.

As with the other series of paintings which occupied his later years, Monet executed innumerable examples at different seasons and different times of day, but, starting with the haystacks series, he began to complete his works in the studio.

In his Thames views he had as many as 100 canvases in progress at the same time, returning to each perhaps 20 or 30 times as the lighting conditions most closely corresponded: “Feverishly searching among these starts, I would choose one that did not differ too much from what I saw”. This erratic process exhausted Monet both physically and mentally, and led to his return to the formerly repudiated method of studio finishing, where he could work at leisure and contemplate the effects he was striving to achieve.
