The Japanese Bridge, Green Harmony

Oil on canvas, 1899

You can now own a Monet reproduction of The Japanese Bridge hand-painted oil painting at museum quality and guaranteed for one year.

The Japanese Bridge one of the 236 recorded canvases in the Waterlilies sequence.

A few months after becoming the owner of the property where he had already lived for ten years, Monet purchased a piece of marshland across the road and declared his intention to construct a water garden.

There were numerous problems, since the villagers of Giverny complained to the authorities that the pond, linked to the Epte, would poison the river. But, permission once granted, the work went ahead quickly, and Monet was soon able to start creating the water garden that was to occupy most of his thoughts and energies for the next three decades.

Early in 1895, before he left for Norway, he painted his first view of the Japanese Bridge that spanned the pond, but it was not until 1898 that he started work in earnest. Most of the canvases he painted at this time are square and show the Japanese Bridge and the water surface dotted with lilies.

In those early works the sky does not appear except as a reflection. The perspective is provided by the plants edging the pond and the weeping willows.

Ten canvases of this first series were exhibited at Durand-Ruel’s gallery. The occasion was euphoric. Even Degas, normally less than enthusiastic about Monet’s work (he said he wished the police would pepper the plein-air painters with shot), was ecstatic, and wanted to buy one of the pictures. Whether he did or not is unclear, since the painting is not included in the auction catalogue listing the works in his studio in 1918. It is even possible that he destroyed it: it would not have been the first time.

The Japanese Bridge, Green Harmony was bought by Isaac de Camondo the day after Durand-Ruel’s exhibition opened. Eight years later he bequeathed his magnificent collection – which included fourteen Monets – to the Louvre.
