The Luncheon is an exquisite picture of subtle and delicate coloring, and was included in the second exhibition of the Impressionist group, held in 1876.

Monet was something of a sybarite and relished good food, fine wines and spirits. He never forgot the wonderful specialities concocted by the Mere Toutain at the Ferme Saint-Simeon, near Honfleur. In this he was a typical product of his background - in the French bourgeois homes of the day food was always plentiful and of the highest quality.

The Luncheon anticipates by thirty years the 'domestic' scenes of Bonnard. It is not so much the representation of a lovely scene, more a hymn of praise to pleasure itself, enshrining everything Monet held most dear - his wife, a tall white silhouette passing in the background, his young son Jean, who is seated on the ground, the charming blossom-filled garden and, above all, the artfully arranged table with its bowls of fruit, silver coffee-pot and coffee cups.

After 1883, when success and fortune were assured, Monet was able to indulge his gourmandise to the full. Rene Gimpel, who stayed at Giverny in 1918, recalled, on the one hand, the splendid Waterlilies presented to him by Monet, and on the other hand the wonderful meal the chef had prepared: hors-d' oeuvre made with the 'best Normandy butter', sweetbreads with spinach, roast chicken - which everyone declined - chicken with black olives, a delicious tart and fruit 'as beautiful to look at as flowers'.

Right up to his last years Monet remained a formidable trencherman, accompanying his lavish meals with Normandy wines and finishing with 'a little glass of something stronger'. 'Not such a little glass either', as Gimpel tells us.

The Luncheon was bought by Caillebotte, who bequeathed it to the state, so that Monet had the satisfaction of seeing one of his works accepted by the museums commission.
