This jewel of Impressionist painting conveys to perfection the sensation of the warm wind and the scented grass, the serenity and glowing light of a fine summer’s day.

Monet was obviously pleased with the picture as he showed it at the first Impressionist exhibition, held at Nadar’s studio 1874. It has all the hallmarks of Impressionism: it was painted out of doors, it shows a scene of everyday life – Camille and Jean running down a grassy slope – the colours are light and it is strongly atmospheric.

Monet’s opinion of his work was apparently shared by the two collectors who, in turn, owned the painting: J B Faure and Etienne Moreau-Nelaton. The former was a famous baritone who sang in Gounod’s Faust at the Opera; he had a positive mania for collecting and owned 67 works by Manet and almost as many Monets. The latter was himself a talented painter and a fine judge of pictures. The Impressionist paintings he acquired, together with the Caillebotte collection, today form the basis of the superb display in the Jeu de Paume Gallery.

Monet’s Argenteuil period is often identified with his paintings of the Seine. But in the course of those seven years he also produced numerous snow scenes, gardens, apple trees in blossom, views of the village, portraits of Camille and Jean and still lifes – not to mention the landscapes executed during visits to Rouen, Le Havre, Etretat and Paris, and also briefly to Holland. On his second Dutch trip he concentrated largely on Amsterdam, which he had barely seen on his way back from London in 1871.

You can only marvel at the creative drive that produced 237 paintings in 7 years, a veritable golden age of painting.
