Monet Reproduction of Waterlilies

Monet Reproduction Water Lily 1908

Waterlilies 1908

Oil on canvas, 1908

You can now own a Monet reproduction of Waterlilies hand-painted oil painting at museum quality and guaranteed for one year.

This utterly perfect painting is one of Monet's 236 recorded Waterlilies canvases in the Waterlilies sequence. It belongs to the group painted in 1907-08, 48 of which were exhibited at Durand-Ruel’s gallery in May/June 1909 under the title chosen by Monet, ‘Les Nympheas, paysage d’eau’.

Overwhelmed with enthusiasm, Romain Rolland wrote to Monet: “When I feel sickened by the mediocrity of present day literature and music, I have only to turn my eyes to painting, where works like your Water Lilies blossom, in order to reconcile myself to our artistic epoch and to feel it is the equal of any other that has gone before”.

Probably it was the success of this exhibition, and the regret voiced on all sides that such an ensemble should be broken up and dispersed, that gave Monet the idea of using waterlilies as a basis for a huge decorative work, one that would literally enclose the spectator on all sides.

In June of that year he explained the outline of the project to Roger-Marx. It was not, however, until the time of the First World War, on insistence of Georges Clemenceau, that he actually implemented his plans.

In 1916 a specially designed studio was built, large enough to accommodate the vast surfaces. The preliminary stage of painting was accomplished with remarkable speed. But then began the process of reworking and retouching the 19 panels, a task that was to occupy Monet for the remaining years of his life – and that in spite of the double cataract that affected his eyesight until it was operated on in 1923.

When Monet died on 6 December 1926, his Waterliles legacy was complete.
