In the Camondo Collection there are two pictures very similar in subject, this one and a larger one which is better known. Truth to tell, the reputation of the other one is partly due to the 43,000 francs it fetched in 1900, the year after Sisley’s death – amends that came too late.

When Sisley painted this picture he was in the very depths of poverty: Murer, the baker and art lover who was so charitable to the Impressionists, speaks in a reminiscent letter to Duret of a Sisley “who was always on the look out for a quick sale”.

We are naturally led to compare the two canveses, all the more so because their composition and spacing are very much alike. The small one is without a doubt the better of the two: in comparison the large one appears empty, the instant not so well chosen, the lighting duller, the trees heavier.

In spite of the subject and its evocation of tragedy the small picture is extraordinarily joyous; this is chiefly owing to its clear sky, intensely blue in color depth being imparted by the few remaining clouds.

All spring is in the budding trees, still leafless, whose shoots form a pink haze. Strong blue reflections play in the lemon-colored water. Unike some of Sisley’s buildings, the house is sturdy and solid, the lower part bistre, the upper part cream. The red patch of the signboard gives a strong note of color and the tiny little figures in the boats are silhouetted in the manner of Daumier.
