In 1885, Pissarro settled for good at Eragny-sur-Epte, not far from Gisors. No one after Millet has felt such contact with the earth and its living growth. But he was more rustic than bucolic. Where Millet’s attachment to the earth had been a little too generalized, his art a kind of pictorial sermon on country life, Pissarro – who owed much to him – was its true painter, more direct, more intimate, more real.

Pissarro probably painted this scene of peasant life in the summer of 1901 (he was at Eragny until July 19, before going to Dieppe). Everything is part of the atmosphere in this picture – the fields, the trees, the harvesters. The air enfolds these figures who partake of their surroundings and merge with the setting. All this is in a light palette, the color of honey, with tones of green and blue.

The scene quivers with life and light. The woman at the right, in blue blouse and brown apron, her profile subtly delineated by the sunlight, stands motionless as a caryatid, watching her companions as they rake.
