The quite sudden and confident emergence of a mature Impressionist technique to be observed in Sisley’s Canal St Martin appears also in this picture by Pissarro. Louveciennes, not far from the Marly aqueduct, was a middle-class suburb of Paris with modest bourgeois villas and gardens where Pissarro had settled in 1868.

It had the advantage of being within reach of the center and the dealer P.F. Martin from whom he received twenty to forty francs for a picture, according to size – the more acceptable since his allowance from home ceased about this time. The Salon catalogue of 1870 in which he had two paintings of Louveciennes gave him the address: ‘Louveciennes (Seine et Oise) and Paris, c/o M. Martin, 52 rue Lafitte’.

An earlier painting of the same title – also in the Louvre – was completed just before Pissarro was compelled to evacuate his house by the surprising rapidity of the German invasion after war began in 1870. Apart from the paintings mainly sold through Martin, who bought Pissarro’s contributions to the 1870 Salon, he was forced to leave behind nearly everything he had painted since coming to Paris in 1855, as well as canvases left with him by Monet.

The best part of fifteen hundred paintings were either destroyed by the German soldiery, who turned his house into a butcher’s shop, or conveyed by devious routes to Germany, to reappear only after a long interval.

Back in Louveciennes after the war, Pissarro painted this second view of the road. The scene was humdrum enough in itself but the faculty of the Impressionists for investing even a commonplace scene with the magic of light and vision is beautifully demonstrated.
