Pissarro was intensely active in the last ten years of his life when he enjoyed an affluence previously unknown. He not only travelled a good deal but showed a new interest in city views of both buildings and crowds.

In 1897 he began the series depicting Paris in vivid combination of buildings and movement which occupied him for several years. He worked from the windows of hotels and other buildings that offered a desired prospect and painted this view of the Place du Theatre Francais in 1898 from the Hotel du Louvre.

Here he excelled in weaving an intricate pattern of moving humanity and horse-drawn vehicles, enjoying it the more perhaps, as a change from the painting of rural scenes at Eragny. The effect of momentariness is perfectly caught, rather recalling the views of Paris made by ‘instantaneous photography’, though Pissarro has more to give in design and, of course, color.

The amateur and Impressionist patron Gustave Caillebotte had earlier produced paintings of the boulevards seen from above in a way that has invited comparison with the contemporary photographs of Hippolyte Jouvin. Whether Pissarro used photographs as a reference it is impossible to say.

The idea of painting the impression of a moving crowd was an innovation in nineteenth-century art by the Impressionists. Pissarro follows the lead given by Monet in his Boulevard des Capucines of 1873. It is of interest however that photography was advancing towards a comparable innovation at about the same time.
