Regatta at Molesey
by Sisley

Oil on canvas, 1874
24 x 36 ins

Hand-painted oil painting reproduction of Regatta at Molesey by Sisley. Identical to the original masterpiece and guaranteed to your total satisfaction for an entire year.

In this oil painting reproduction of Regatta at Molesey, we have re-created Sisley’s technique of achieving a singular freedom. It is almost with ideograms that he depicts the swiftly rowing oarsmen. His fresh, rapid, comma-shaped brushstrokes give the painting its resonance.

Around the large flags billowing in the wind, he skilfully opposes the white verticals of the judges in the foreground and the spots representing strollers in the mound on the other bank to the oblique movements of the boatmen.

Of English parentage, Sisley at the age of eighteen had worked for a while in a business firm in London. It was near the capital that he painted this canvas, when, seventeen years later, he madea trip to the country of his parents’ origin with Jean-Baptise Faure, the baritone of the Opera and friend and collector of Manet.

In this period, Sisley’s paintings sold for between fifty and three hundred francs. They went still lower as time went on. But the artist persisted in sending his canvases to the official Salon, because, as he said: “If I were accepted, I think I would sell a lot”.

Theodore Duret helped him to find buyers. Around 1878, he found a patron in Jourde, editor of Le Siecle, who bought seven of his pictures (although the art critic of the paper, Castagnary, friend of Courbet and a champion of Realism, had little liking for Impressionist painting).

Regatta at Molesey formed part of the Caillebotte Collection.
