Pissarro’s distinguished features, fine brow and patriarchal beard were often portrayed by his confreres, by Cezanne, Gauguin, Guillaumin and Renoir, and he painted self portraits at different periods, this example showing him at the age of forty-three.

This was the period when he was working in company with Cezanne at Pontoise and Auvers and the year before the first Impressionist exhibition, to which Pissarro sent six landscapes.

The self portrait is painted with a due Impressionist regard for the incidence of light and the general disposition of light and shade rather than with any sharply detailed outline. The scheme of color still bears traces of the influence of Corot in its subtle variations of grey and lightly indicated flesh tones in shadow.

At a later date he set himself to show that a portrait could be successfully carried out with the divided touches of color of the fully-developed Impressionist technique. The simplicity of style, however, in this portrait of his middle age is majestic in result and the likeness as compared with photographs of the artist is unmistakable.
