Sisley was in many respects the most self-effacing and the least deliberately controversial of all the Impressionists, and also the one who stayed closest to the original Impressionist principles throughout his life.
He painted his quiet country landscapes, more often than not including a river or pond, keeping in touch with his friends, and exhibiting largely through Durand-Ruel, without achieving much commercial success: he is a classic example of the artist who dies destitute and whose prices then immediately rise spectacularly.
He was a close associate of the princliple figures of Impressionism, having met Monet, Renoir, and Bazille in Charles Gleyre’s studio in 1863. But even before that he had discovered for himself the landscapes of Constable and Turner while in England to Brush up his English.
He had been among the first of the group to discover Argenteuil, and painted this footbridge on one of his early visits.
