As soon as war and the disturbances of the Commune that followed it were over, Pissarro lost no time in returning to France. He was back at Louveciennes by the end of June, 1871.

The Seine at Marly was one of the first pictures to announce his homecoming. In style it has a broad treatment so closely related to his work at Louveciennes immediately before the 1870 war and to what he produced while in London that it would be impossible to deduce from this group of paintings anything of the drama of contemporary history.

Realists of a kind the Impressionists were, the avidity for light and atmospheric color as Pissarro displays it here, tended to create an idyll and to exclude the emotional reaction to current events that had been an aspect of Romanticism.

Often painting on the curving bank of the Seine, the Impressionists were inclined by the nature of their subject to describe a diagonal across the canvas spreading outwards to one side. In conjunction with the vertical of the river steamer’s funnel this adds an originality of composition to the effect of color in Pissarro’s picture.
