Sisley was essentially the visual poet of spring and early summer and the freshness of the season is here conveyed in a way that can scarcely fail to infect the spirits with something of its tingling vivacity.

The riverside path along which the girl walks in meditation – the small meadow path or chemin des petits pres - was between By and Veneux some three miles north-west of Moret-sur-Loing. Sisley settled in Moret in 1882 but worked both before and after at Veneux and Les Sablons and there are several pictures painted around the spot shown in this example. The gleam of light on the opposite side of the Seine locates the village of Champagne.

A walk by the river bank was a favorite theme with Sisley. The blue sky with its soft and placid flocks of clouds is typical. The follower of Corot may be discerned in the appreciation with which the slender trees are treated and also in the significance that carefully selected points of focus have in the composition.

Not only does the blue of the girl’s dress bring sky color down in to the picture but the yellow brim of her hat and the white of her collar are gleams caught up and repeated by the patch of light in the background and the distant sparkle on the other side of the Seine, so helping to diffuse the effect of light throughout the picture space.

That the sun seems to shine is not due to any forced brightness but to the lively and varied touches of the brush as it picks out highlights or follows the track of cast shadows across the path and over the bushes.
