Wheat Fields near Argenteuil is one of Sisley’s least watery paintings. It is a powerful piece of design, with the confident upward sweep of the golden stand of wheat from the right of the picture, the green-and-brown cabbage patch in the center, and the clump of dark trees providing the focus of the whole, and upon which everything converges.

And over all a pale blue sky with whiffs of white cloud apparently being blown by the wind which animates the trees below – an element of the painting which seems closer to the practice of Sisley’s English models, especially Constable, than to anything in the work of his contemporary French Impressionists-to-be.

Sisley’s father, ruined by the Franco-Prussian War, had died in 1871, leaving him to support himself and his family entirely by painting. The sale of this painting Wheat Fields near Argenteuil to Durand-Ruel in 1874, although for quite a modest price (his average at this period was between 200 and 300 francs) was a step in the right direction.
